Having trained as a textile designer in the 1980s at Dewsbury & Batley Art College, West Yorkshire, it had been my great regret that I felt I’d missed the opportunity to pursue a career in art and design and I subsequently fell into a career of administrative and finance roles at various companies and schools.  After almost 30 years of ‘office jobs’ I became increasingly unsettled and in November 2015 I began to rekindle my artistic abilities, drawing and creating some early designs with encouragement from my partner.

In November 2016 I finally grasped the opportunity when the company I worked for was sold and my role became redundant. Thus my career as an artist is still very much in its infancy. I have now formally exhibited at the CORE centre in Solihull in June 2017 and at East Lodge, Leamington Spa October 2017. I am a member of the Solihull Artists Forum and Leamington Studio Artists.

My work is highly illustrative and much of it so far is more design-led as opposed to fine art, featuring a combination of ink pens on watercolour paper, acrylics on canvas and I am beginning to explore other media such as glass and found objects.

I now feel that my work is beginning to take a new direction with works which have evolved on from my early illustrations and designs, such as my recent painting of a patterned elephant. I feel that the design-led theme connects me back to my artistic roots in textile design, and draws on many of the themes that I am personally drawn to.

My primary interest is in creating images of stylised animals as I have a passion for all creatures great and small. I aim to capture expression in animalistic faces which some would say is attempting to humanise them, however I see this as an extension of the way in which we connect with art and attribute human qualities to animals. I am now planning a several canvases which feature night skies, forests and silhouettes of animals in order to explore a new set of artistic ideas.
